Brain-Gut Blockage
In class, I posed the question: “If we don’t know the root cause of an illness, what exactly are we treating?” Everyone understood the question, but few truly pondered it.
Watching a foreign speaker give a lecture, the audience erupted in laughter at a joke I couldn’t comprehend. That humor was rooted in their culture, their context, and their environment.
Illness, however, is not a phenomenon unique to any one country. It is a common enemy of all humankind. Since disease is not a cultural issue, it must be a matter of thought—of how we think—and the way we think is shaped by our environment.
The flawed logic of modern medicine is a profound issue, with consequences that go beyond the individual—it is not a journey where one can circle the globe and return to the same place; it is a fear of never finding the way home.
If we truly understood the root cause of disease, diabetes wouldn’t require blood sugar-lowering drugs, cancer wouldn’t need chemotherapy, hypertension wouldn’t demand antihypertensives, and high cholesterol certainly wouldn’t necessitate lipid-lowering medications.
Looking at the global medical landscape from this perspective, we see crowded clinics where patients wait endlessly for appointments with top doctors, desperate pleas for treatment accompanied by bribes—how has humankind, supposedly so intelligent, been deceived into a state of unconscious compliance? The forces behind this must be truly sinister.
If someone intends to deceive you—whether to trick you or steal from you—and you fail to see through their intentions, losing either your body or your wealth, it is because they have exploited your weakness. It is because your greed has aligned with their malice.
At the root of deception lies either love or greed. Whether due to poor judgment of character or arrogance, in the end, the truth remains: a lack of wisdom.
If I ever write a memoir, there will surely be a chapter titled “Deception.” In it, I will clearly state that I was deceived—by myself. The people who misled me were merely supporting characters.
There is an old saying: “Experience brings wisdom.” A lack of wisdom is part of the growth process. Everyone recalls moments from childhood when they couldn’t understand what adults were saying. But growth is not inevitable; sometimes, we unknowingly restrict our own development.
The phrase “a sudden enlightenment” doesn’t describe an instant explosion of wisdom. Rather, it refers to the ability to comprehend truth, to be willing to think deeply, and to grasp all the key points. And “having” wisdom can only come after “being willing” to seek it.
A perplexing reality is that people who crave health often reject it. Many are accustomed to justifying their poor health, always pointing fingers at someone else. Either they claim innocence, or they are simply relieved that their heart is still beating.
Failing to think critically is a phenomenon. Not reading is the root cause of this failure. From my own life, I have realized the deep connection between reading and critical thinking, which has further helped me understand why the global environment is deteriorating so rapidly.
There is another way to observe sluggish brain function—through the parallel dysfunction of the brain and the gut. It’s a chicken and egg situation: physical accumulation on one side, physiological accumulation on the other.
Both the brain and the gut are powerful messaging organs, each possessing immense cognitive space. We are only familiar with the brain’s thinking ability because we actively use it. Yet, we are largely unaware of the gut’s capacity for thought.
It is an accepted fact that the gut is our second brain. The problem is that we continue to let the first brain dominate the second. We ignore the reality that these two must communicate and remain in balance. This truth is not just overlooked—it is deeply unfamiliar to most.
It is terrifying that the second brain has no voice. How did we suppress it? By treating it as a garbage dump, allowing the desires and habits of the first brain to dictate its fate.
The first brain assumes the second brain is functioning normally, believing that as long as waste is eliminated daily, everything is fine. The reality, however, is that waste accumulates, blocking transmissions, preventing the first brain from hearing the second.
From people who suffer from chronic constipation yet eat three full meals a day, we can understand how extreme climates manifest in the human body. The stubbornness of the first brain not only pollutes the second brain but also feeds back into its own thought processes, creating more mental blockages (negative thinking).
The phrase “A belly full of waste, a mind full of negativity” is not a joke—it is the prevailing reality of modern society. The absurd “treating symptoms instead of the root cause” mentality that dominates medicine has only exacerbated the congestion between these two brains.
Examining the first brain’s attitudes and behaviors, we find that stubbornness is a mild issue—arrogance is the real disease. When communication between the two brains breaks down, lack of awareness is a minor symptom, while hypochondria is the severe one.
The fundamental solution is for the first brain to submit to the second. The first brain must take responsibility for maintaining the environment of the second brain. This is the essence of fasting. As human health continues to decline, fasting has emerged as a critical and necessary practice for all.
Those who respect gut intelligence practice fasting. They do not do so because they enjoy fasting but because they know it is necessary. Fasting, at its core, is like leaving farmland fallow—it gives the gut the opportunity to rebuild a thriving ecosystem.
Unobstructed, two-way communication between the brain and the gut is essential for bodily balance. Within the second brain exists what is often called the microbiome—a third brain. By nurturing a healthy third brain, we ensure the well-being of the second; by maintaining the second and third brains, we secure the health of the first.
