When I heard about the passing of singer Khalil Fong, my first reaction was: Another tragedy caused by lack of sleep.
Having followed both domestic and international singers for a long time, I have come to label every premature death of a singer as a case of “Sleep Neglect Syndrome.”
American singer Glen Campbell suffered from dementia in his later years. This struck me deeply because I was familiar with all his songs. I realized that those who spent their youth creating during the night were, in a way, pre-booking Alzheimer’s. Of course, this is just the tip of the iceberg.
Human arrogance is punished by nature. Giving up sleep at night is one of the countless small icebergs floating atop a massive super iceberg.
I have long advocated for respecting bodily awareness. Initially, my focus was on hoarding waste, but as my awareness of health expanded, I came to understand that an even greater storm loomed ahead. Beyond just neglecting sleep, humanity also underestimates the destructive power of stress and medication.
The threats to our health are right beside us. We bear stress and accumulate emotions, all in the name of survival and making a living. We sacrifice sleep and carry the burden of defying natural laws.
The Consequence of Disregarding Sleep
Physical imbalance is the result. A doctor’s diagnosis is the result. Everything we face is merely a result. Even willingly becoming dependent on medication is just another result.
A world obsessed with outcomes has no real truth. A results-driven environment breeds even worse consequences. A results-oriented education system disconnects people entirely from root causes. Business models that cater to consequences have led humanity to misinterpret bodily deterioration as an unpredictable storm.
Breaking school rules results in demerits. Breaking family rules results in punishment. Breaking the body’s rules results in losing its ability to regenerate. The ultimate penalty is the termination of life itself.
Medical education neglects crucial aspects of human health, and the backlash against the body has begun. The biological settings that follow natural laws and circadian rhythms remain invisible to modern medicine. From one perspective, this is not the fault of medicine—it simply does not account for the chapters of biological design in its scope.
People must recognize the consequences of worshipping medicine. No matter how much effort is put into damage control, it will ultimately be in vain—because the direction is wrong, because we have strayed too far from the root cause.
What doctors perceive as symptom relief is not true healing. What doctors prescribe is not the solution the body truly needs. If we zoom out and observe the bigger picture, humanity is collectively acting out a play called “The Road to Ruin.”
The Collective Sacrifice of Sleep
Hospitals cannot exist without emergency rooms. Hospitals cannot function without inpatient wards. Hospitals cannot operate without medical staff working night shifts. This means that someone must clean up the mess caused by society’s disregard for health. But what the public sacrifices is not just sleep—it is their health. What people abandon is not just health—it is life itself.
During the pandemic, healthcare workers who died saving patients were seen as rare tragedies. But the truth is, all healthcare workers are sacrificing. They chose this profession knowing it would take a heavy toll on their bodies.
Medical professionals normalize the lifestyle of staying up all night, and other industries follow suit. But even without deliberate imitation, this has become a collective bias—staying up late is seen as an option.
Working on creative projects at night is not just a phenomenon; it is an ecosystem. Artists, designers, architects, and writers are accustomed to reversing day and night, which is why 24-hour convenience stores exist.
From an investment perspective, this is the most classic case of losing more than one gains. Life is priceless. Health cannot be bought with money. No matter how much one earns or receives, it is still a case of focusing on the small while losing the big.
This is the inevitable outcome of human civilization having electricity and artificial lighting. When we examine human behavioral trends from a biological perspective, we see that the drive for altruism stems from our biological design to preserve the collective at the cost of the individual.
The Misconception of Wellness
Growing up with health-conscious teachings, I vaguely remember the warnings about what should and should not be eaten, as well as reminders about what we must eat more of and what we must eat less of. But my awakening has shown me that this is a nutritional misunderstanding—not a genuine signal from the body.
People who prioritize nutrition and exercise can still suddenly collapse. Yet post-mortem discussions rarely touch on sleep, avoid addressing the side effects of medication, and completely ignore the fact that the body’s internal time axis was not properly maintained.
Disregarding sleep negates all efforts toward health. Excessive medication drains vital energy. Nature’s laws cannot be violated. Nature’s power cannot be ignored.
The positive effects of good sleep permeate every aspect of life—learning, memory, and immunity; thinking, adaptability, and social skills; emotional balance and healing. Yet we have long underestimated the essence of true wellness.
At this point, how many people have started to reflect on their own struggles with sleep? That stubborn consciousness of the brain must return to respecting the body. Rebuilding the gut microbiome is the best strategy. Understanding the body’s internal time axis is the first step toward reconciliation with oneself.
When the body signals that it is time to sleep, all thoughts unrelated to rest must retreat. At night, intelligence holds no power, and indulging in desires will ultimately lead to complete failure.
